It’s illegal to try to give away puppies or kittens

I suppose all dogs and cats must be fixed in this town.

6.12.020 Selling, giving away or auctioning animals.

It is a violation of this title to sell or give away unaltered dogs and cats in any public places or to auction off or raffle unaltered dogs and cats as prizes or gifts. No person in the city shall publish or advertise to city residents the availability of any unaltered cat or dog unless the publication or advertisement includes: the unaltered animal’s license number, provided, however that nothing in this ordinance shall prohibit licensed breeders from advertising in national publications for sale of a planned litter or litter(s).

  • Animal rights nuts are going to government bodies, mostly city councils, conning them into passing these laws. If it comes to your town, get a group of more sensible people to attend and speak out against the laws. This is how more idiotic animal rights laws get passed…they start small…then “own” you before you know it!

    [Reply]

    Ashley Reply:

What is your problem, exactly? Why do “animal rights activists want to ‘own’ you”?? All they want is for fewer animals to die in shelters. Thousands of animals are put down every day because people like you are too stubborn to realize that you are causing those deaths. We need to start taking responsibility for pet overpopulation!

  • The law isn’t to prevent you from giving away puppies or kittens. The key word here is ‘unaltered’. In other words, the animal must be fixed if you plan on giving it away.

The reason is, someone receiving an animal for free (instead of paying hundreds of dollars) has less incentive to pay to have them fixed and could more easily decide that they no longer want them, making them more likely to escape. (and if they do escape, the owner is less likely to search for them as diligently)

“Unaltered” animals can then breed in the wild, contributing to massive increase in population. That means many more animals than usual will have to be killed when they aren’t adopted from local animal shelters.

If you get the animal fixed before giving it away (even if the person you give it to agrees to pay for it) then the law doesn’t effect you. Sounds reasonable to me.

  • wow. im surprised you all were immediately mad about this. its exactly how Mike D says.. if youre going to “give away” an animal then it should have to be fixed. so many animals are dying EVERY DAY because no one adopts them when they are picked up by animal shelters or taken to the pound. its horrible! if people would fix their animals in the first place, freaking just pay like 60 dollars it would save a lot of animal lives and a lot of grief. you think the people in the shelters LIKE injecting the animals that cant get homes? just fix your animals people it takes like 24 hours if they have to stay the night, and like 60 dollars. plus its cheaper when theyre younger. so fix them!

  • This is the stupidest law I have seen in along time. So I can not give kittens or puppies away in a public place (Wal-Mart parking lot.) So the alternative is just dropping them off on the side of the road. Sorry pet lovers it is your law.

    [Reply]

    Ashley Reply:

How is dropping them off at the side of the road your only alternative?? WHY DO YOU HAVE UNALTERED ANIMALS IN THE FIRST PLACE? Solution: DON’T HAVE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. The law is to encourage people to have their animals fixed. Unaltered animals mean that thousands more will die in shelters. This is our fault- we have to do something to fix it. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

  • This is so stupid. I took in a stray mother cat with kittens with the intention that when the kittens get old enough I would find homes for or give to the no kill shelter. The reason I went ahead and took on the mother cat was so she would not get pregnant again before I got her. Now I find out I can not go to Walmart or any other public place and I have no choice but to give them to a shelter. The one no kill shelter in my area said they could not take them, they did not give me a reason why. Now I will have to try and advitise more on the internet which the problem with that is the people who may want the kittens may not live in my area. Or I will have to try and find a no kill shelter outside my area and I will have to drive further if I can find one to take them. Or I can take them to the pound and worry that they could be killed. Thanks to this stupid law.

Thanks to the stupid law? I’m sorry that the “stupid law” makes it inconvenient for you to spread unaltered animals across your city to reproduce and create MORE animals that eventually WILL end up in a shelter anyway!!! Please try to think about the long term consequences of your actions!!!!!! More animals will die in the end for your convenience.

Thousands of animals die in shelters every day because people like you fail to acknowledge the problem of pet overpopulation. Please educate yourself on the benefits of spaying ad neutering. Your dog/cat will be fine without his balls. You’re the one projecting your feelings onto the animal.

  • While I can see that some of you have the right intentions, this is really the wrong medicine for the ailment.

Firstly an animal that’s not in the shelter is an animal that’s not taking up cage space which is already in high demand. If everybody can be involved in the process of finding these animals good homes, it makes things easier on everybody.

More importantly this law creates situations where it’s expensive and inconvenient to get rid of unwanted animals legally, so why not just simply abandon them so they can roam around freely interbreeding and creating feral cat colonies? It’s not like you’re likely to be traced back and caught.

Most people who want to keep a pet get it spayed or neutered anyway to reduce personal liability of creating more pets in other people’s yards. So all you’re doing is keeping the animal out of the hands of somebody who’s likely have the means by which to spay or neuter it, by putting the onus on a person who probably doesn’t, possibly leading to the reverse of the desired effect.

@ Mike D specifically, I don’t follow your logic at all. Paying money to receive an animal creates no logical incentive to spay or neuter animals. Perhaps you’re more likely to be able to do so if you can come up with the cash but one doesn’t directly follow the other.

In fact, I think it again creates the opposite effect, since paying that sort of money is typically justified by buying pedigrees that’re valuable to breed and sell off. This reduces the pool of people who might consider adopting a mutt by creating an alternative that’s largely considered to be preferable. If this law only applied to pedigrees, it might be construed to make sense as an incentive to prevent breeders from overbreeding themselves but instead these people are specifically exempted…

This law is utter nonsense in my book.

  • Spaying or Neutering animals does not save lives!
Hence, taking away the reproductive system of a living creature only reduces the population more. They have no life to create. Its so funny how people don’t see that these laws are made to hinder us. In China, there is a one child policy. First, it started by having animals fixed. Next, it’s YOUR ovaries and testicles they are taken away. A cat or dog is no different than you and I. Don’t allow the excuse of “overpopulation” to take our humanity away.

Global Warming is now blamed on overpopulation. So, let’s start by every one here going under the knife. People, we have to have the earth!!!!! Really?… I don’t think so.

    WAKE UP PEOPLE!

  • if no one is allowed to breed pets who mostly get cared for properly then in a few years you wont have to worry about your pounds being full there will be no more dogs and cats to own all you amimal lib people just enjoy being in power and control i breed some pets i look after them and ensure they get good homes so stop trying to controll peoples rights to enjoy pets

  • How can you think this law is stupid. Why have kittens if you intend to hope someone can take of it? Would you have kids if you intended to put them up for adoption? If you do get a pet and dont want any more then take the neccessary steps to make sure that doesnt happen. As for the guy you said ‘would you cut off your balls’ erm… What do men do when they dont wona have kids?

    Fucking retard.
