Bears like menstruating women, wear tampons not pads!

The government strongly suggests that women wear internal tampons and not pads…..when hiking in places like Yellowstone National Park. This is directly from the NPS (National Park Service) Website

“Considering bears’ highly developed sense of smell, it may seem logical that they could be attracted to odors associated with menstruation. Studies on this subject are few and inconclusive. If a woman chooses to hike or camp in bear country during menstruation, a basic precaution should be to wear internal tampons, not external pads. Used tampons should be double-bagged in a zip-lock type bag and stored the same as garbage.”

Related Stupid Laws, Crazy Laws, and just plain Stupid Laws:

  • Why exactly is this a stupid law? If bears are attracted by the smell of blood, it only makes sense for a woman to be extra careful when she has her period.

  • But why make it a law, instead of a suggestion?

  • If you are a woman having her “time of month” it is in your best interest to take all steps in bear country to limit your scent of blood. I spent some time in Alaska and have heard firsthand from women how dangerous it is for a menstruating woman in bear country is. One co-worker near Eagle River asked me more than once to escort her to her car with my .44 Magnum.

  • By the way, this is not a law but a safety suggestion. This can apply anyplace where bears live. Black bears can be just as dangerous in the lower 48 states that the big Grizzlies or Polars can be in Ak or Canada. Just important health concerns for women that all women need to know about.

  • The canadian guvernment issued a warning 30 years ago that both menstrating and sexual intercourse attracts bears . I read this in a phamphlet when I visited BANIF and JASPER national parks . Although this fact is not the skipping down the trail P.C. view … The fact is that animals can smell sources of sex . As much as what 10 to 50 times what a human can . It is unpopular to acknowlege this fact . We are a source of scents . Have you ever seen a perfumed person with yellow jackets and bugs harrased ? Bears smell blood . Plain and simple .
